OUR HISTORY

our HISTORY

In about 1886 a piece of land was given to the Island Creek Church Family.  This land was donated for erection of a church building.  The Church had been established as a worshipping body some years earlier and worship services were held in a hall behind the present site.  The frame building was erected on the donated land and the first cornerstone was laid on October 31, 1925.  Rev. Thomas Everett was the Pastor and Bro. R.L. Boney, Bro. W.I. Staten, Bro. W.K. Williams, and Mr. J.E. Boney were the Trustees.  Some of the members were R.L. Boney, R.H. Boney, Allen Graham, Ernest Boney, and Walter Boney.

In 1945, the building was in need of repair or replacement.  The members decided they wanted a new building.

A block building was built around the frame building while we still had service in the frame building.  After the completion of the block walls, the frame building was torn out.  For a period of several months, service was held in the old school building adjacent to the church.  The top of the block structure was completed.  The floor, walls, and ceiling were completed while the stained windows were installed.  We were then ready to worship in our new church.  The members have always tried to keep the church repaired and improved when necessary.  This construction was under the leadership of Bishop Lawrence H. Hemingway.  Dr. G.D. Karnes was the Presiding Elder, Rev. A.A. Thompson was the Pastor, Bro. Robert L. Boney was the Vice-Chairman of the Trustees.
